Fresh Water Shortage

There are more than 326 trillion gallons of water on the earth, covering 70% of our planet. However, less than 3% is actually fresh water and 2/3 of that is stored in ice caps and glaciers, or otherwise unavailable for use.

Water scarcity is a serious issue not just for drinking water, but also because of increased disease due to sanitation issues, and has a serious impact on ecosystems. The WWF estimate that 2.7 billion people worldwide face a water shortage for at least one month of the year, and that 2/3 of the world’s population will face water shortages by 2025 based on current consumption rates. Global demand is expected to exceed supply by 40% by 2030.

How Can Industry Help?

Worldwide, industry accounts for 20% of all water consumption for such purposes as washing, diluting, cooling or transporting products, and facility sanitation.

Environmental sustainability is important to nearly all manufacturing businesses. We can reduce this rate of consumption by modifying behaviour, increasing re-use, or by installing water-saving equipment.

Many organisations have implemented initiatives throughout their business to help reduce their water consumption. Often this involves water meters throughout their process, and education of staff on best practice of water use. Organisations such as the Carbon Trust help their clients reach the “Carbon Trust Water Standard” which is an initiative aimed at achieving year on year reduction of water usage.

How Pigging Systems Reduce Water Usage

As well as increasing profitability through improving product yield changeover times, HPS helps its clients to reduce their environmental impact, including reducing water consumption, by installing product recovery systems. This and further projects undertaken by HPS at Wickham Hill have resulted in over 40 million litres of water savings per annum (in addition to increasing wine yield by over 400,000 litres per annum).
