How Pigging Systems Work

Video Demonstrating the Single-Pig Loop System

Here’s our latest video which gives a step-by-step sequence of how a pigging system works. It also highlights some of the fundamental components of the system and what they do.

The demonstration system featured in the video is an Automatic Single-Pig System, which resides at our head office in Nottingham, UK.  The key components of this system include the pipework, pig, pig detection system, HMI control software, receive and launch station, pig housing, various valves, supports and fittings plus more. The system is a loop system, which has been done for demonstration purposes.

The pigging system also includes transparent sections on the bend and on the straight section of the pipework.  As you can see from the video, this is beneficial as it enables you to see that the pipelines are clear of the residual liquid following the pigging sequence, and that no traces of the product are remaining.

What the Pigging Video Shows

In the video, the process begins with the operator using the control software (HMI systems) to begin the product transfer sequence. A blue liquid with medium viscosity can then be seen leaving the storage tank and filling the line of the product. Following this, the operator uses the control software to begin the pigging sequence.

The pig is introduced into the line from its housing via a piggable diverter valve. The HPS pig then recovers and removes the blue liquid from the line, which is forced to the destination. As it’s a loop system, the destination is the storage tank. At the end of the process, the pig is automatically propelled by compressed air from the receiver and back to its housing. This is confirmed by the pig detection system which illuminates red when the pig is present.

Appointments Available to See the Pigging System

The single-pig pigging system is available for appointments, to anyone with an interest in pigging and product recovery.

If you would like to arrange an appointment so you can see first-hand an automatic single-pig system in operation, please contact HPS, or your local agent or representative.
