How a Chocolate Manufacturer Improves Production Efficiency Using Liquid Product Recovery (Pigging)
We’ve recently released a new case study on pigging for chocolate processing and production. The case study demonstrates how HPS provides Mondelēz International, Inc. (Nasdaq: MDLZ) with a single-pig pigging system.
The pigging system for chocolate is helping the manufacturer increase product yields, and capacity, use shared lines instead of dedicated pipelines, cut waste, and increase efficiency at their Svoge chocolate manufacturing facility in Bulgaria.
Mondelez are a long-standing customer of HPS and are already benefiting from multiple HPS pigging systems.
About Mondelēz
Mondelēz International, Inc. (Nasdaq: MDLZ) empowers people to snack in over 150 countries around the world.
Their portfolio includes iconic, global, and local brands such as Oreo, belVita and LU biscuits; Cadbury Dairy Milk, Milka and Toblerone chocolate; Sour Patch Kids candy and Trident gum.
The focus of the HPS case study is the Mondelez, Svoge chocolate manufacturing facility in Bulgaria. It’s one of the biggest and most modern chocolate manufacturing sites in Bulgaria.
In addition to being the birthplace of Milka Peanut Caramel, the Svoge production facility also produces global and local brands such as Cadbury, Alpen Gold, Lacta, Moreni, Svoge and Sezoni.
HPS Pigging Solution for Chocolate Products
HPS designed, supplied, and implemented a fully automatic pigging system for the chocolate manufacturer.
They wanted to incorporate an additional system to clean the pipelines when switching from one product to another.
The HPS pigging system is fully automatic to ensure optimum efficiency and productivity. With complete pigging process control, this improves safety and reduces the chances of errors through less manual intervention.
Like most pigging systems for chocolate, the HPS equipment also includes water jacketing. This keeps the chocolate at the correct temperature without degradation. This is extremely important as if the temperature isn’t correct, it may lead to the chocolate freezing up, solidifying, and then being wasted.
What are the Benefits of the HPS Pigging Solution?
Mondelez approached HPS to incorporate a pigging system to clean the chocolate pipes when switching from one product to another, enabling the manufacturer to use the pipe for multi-products.
The HPS pigging system recovers up to 99.5% of product residue from the pipe. This is achieved using an HPS specialist projectile (called the ‘pig’).
If it wasn’t for pigging, this product would be discarded as waste during the manufacturers cleaning and changeover process.
Therefore, the HPS pigging solution increases product yields and cuts waste. Incorporating a pigging process also improves capacity and flexibility, enabling the same processing line to be used for different flavours and configurations of product.
The pigging system also speeds up changeover times, and saves significant amounts of time, resources, and labour.
Improving Efficiency and Sustainability
Another major benefit of the HPS pigging solution is that it improves efficiency in the chocolate manufacturing plant.
This is through higher yields, increased capacity, faster changeovers, less downtime, and waste reduction.
The pigging solution also improves environmental sustainability. This is through saving product, cutting waste, lowering energy use, and using less resources.
