How Multiple HPS Pigging Systems Are Reducing Bacterial Contamination In Water-Based Paint Processing

Our latest case study on pigging for paint processing is now available on our website! The case study demonstrates how leading Portuguese paint manufacturer, Barbot Paints, is using multiple HPS Advanced Liquid Product Recovery (Pigging) Systems to reduce bacterial contamination and improve environmental sustainability.

Barbot Paints are using their pigging systems to combat contamination and improve product quality and safety at their facility in Porto, Portugal.

About Barbot Paints

Founded in 1920, Barbot Paints began as a family business, prioritising rigour, safety, and quality in their products.

Barbot manufacture a wide variety of products, including water and solvent-based paints, additives, varnishes, sealants, and solvents.

Dominant in the domestic market, Barbot also has an international presence and reputation, trading in Spain, France, Belgium, Angola, and Cape Verde. Additionally, Barbot also has plants in Angola and Cape Verde.

The Barbot Group consists of five companies, and their brands include Barbot and Anpal-Sodulax.

HPS Pigging Solutions For Paint Manufacturing

After regulatory changes within the EU regarding the use of biocides in paint, Barbot noticed that they were experiencing a large quantity of product recalls due to bacterial contamination in their water-based paint.

Due to the bacterial contamination, 20% of the paint produced by Barbot was being returned for rework, resulting in time lost and costly scrapping of the contaminated product packaging.

HPS designed, supplied, implemented, and commissioned four fully automatic single-pig pigging systems for Barbot Paints.

Like other pigging systems for paint manufacturers, the HPS equipment is hygienic, reducing contamination significantly and improving product quality and safety.

How is Barbot Paints Benefitting From HPS Pigging Technology?

Since the final commissioning of the HPS pigging systems took place, Barbot have reported a 95% decrease in recalls due to contamination. This is a significant reduction in product that requires rework, increasing production output and reducing packaging waste.

Barbot are also recycling the water used in the pigging sequence in their production processes, contributing to their environmental friendliness and corporate sustainability.

There are many more benefits of pigging for Barbot to experience, including increased product yields, reduced product waste and effluent, and increased capacity!
